SCROLL

Last week, Charterhouse celebrated International Week of Languages, bringing together pupils, staff, and visitors to celebrate the many languages spoken and studied across our community. Through film, language tasters, Chapel services, an inspiring guest lecture, and a celebration of the European Day of Languages, the week provided plenty of opportunities to explore the ways in which languages can broaden our horizons and connect us with other people and cultures.

French took centre stage on Tuesday evening as Specialists (Year 12 and Year 13 pupils) gathered for a screening of Les Intouchables. With its warmth and humour, the film offered the chance to experience French away from vocabulary lists and grammar exercises, immersing pupils instead in the language through story, character, and culture. A relaxed film night proved the perfect way to get the week’s celebrations underway.

Earlier that afternoon, 40 Year 8 pupils from Edgeborough School, part of the Charterhouse Family of Schools, joined us for a lively afternoon of German and Spanish. Led by Mr Duke, Head of German, and Mr García Encinas, Head of Spanish, alongside some of our Second YeSpecialist (Year 13) linguists, the sessions encouraged pupils to dive straight in, experiment with unfamiliar words and phrases, and discover the fun of communicating in another language. They rose to the challenge with infectious enthusiasm, while our Specialists were fantastic ambassadors, sharing their own love of languages, and giving our visitors a flavour of language learning at Charterhouse.

International Week of Languages was a wonderful celebration of the vibrant multilingual community at Charterhouse, and it was brilliant to see pupils embracing every opportunity to discover, enjoy, and share their passion for languages.

On Wednesday and Thursday, languages took centre stage in Chapel, with services led by our Heads of School and Monitors. Celebrating the many languages and backgrounds represented at Charterhouse, pupils reflected on the role language plays in helping us understand one another and build connections. At the heart of the services was a simple message: we do not need to share the same language or background to be curious about one another, to listen, and to make someone feel welcome.

A highlight of the week was a visit from language-learning expert and polyglot coach Richard Simcott, who speaks an extraordinary 30 languages. On Wednesday evening, he delivered two inspiring sessions, first to Fifth Form (Year 11) language pupils and then to Specialists (Year 12 and 13). Sharing stories and insights from his own experience, Richard explored the fascinating world of multilingualism and challenged pupils to think differently about how and why we learn languages. His infectious enthusiasm left plenty of food for thought, not least about the places, people, and opportunities that languages can open up.

Friday brought another change of pace with the European Day of Languages. In the Library, pupils were challenged to take on a special ML Book Bingo, exploring books in different languages and discovering some of the multilingual resources on the shelves. Thanks to Ms Pizarro, the activity added a fun and interactive finale to a week of linguistic discovery.

Throughout the week, pupils encountered languages in all sorts of ways, through film, conversation, literature, cultural exchange, and the experiences of other language learners. Together, these activities brought home an important message: languages are much more than subjects on a timetable. They are a means of communicating with others, discovering different perspectives, and understanding the world through someone else's eyes.

A huge thank you to everyone who brought the week to life, including our Modern Languages staff, the Library team, Chapel, Heads of School and Monitors, our visitors from Edgeborough, and all the pupils who took part.
